This is significant because every volunteer at the Heritage Park Veterans Museum is a veteran themselves. The museum’s tours typically last around one-and-a-half hours, and are led by the volunteers who work for the museum. Tours are free of charge for everyone to ensure all visitors can take advantage of this experience. Since the beginning, admission to the museum has been free, with the option for guests to make a donation of any amount to help maintain its operations. There is even a Huey combat helicopter parked on the side lawn outside the barn for a real-life look into military aviation. Virtually every item at the museum has been donated by generous benefactors who want to keep their own or a family member’s military experience alive. The collection has grown exponentially, since moving from a small two-room building to the iconic red barn at Heritage Park. Head curator Jim Joyce searched through his personal belongings as a career military man to find pieces to add to the exhibits. At that time, the museum consisted of just five glass cases, nine mannequins and 15 uniforms. The Heritage Park Veterans Museum opened its doors on Veterans Day in November of 2010.
